Sales Interview Techniques and Advise
Preparation
Agencies like to meet pro-active, innovative & enthusiastic consultants in interviews, it is important to prepare for the interview, don't rely on just browsing the website, do some secondary research and think of questions regarding the role and the company to ask.
Dress to impress
You should go into an interview looking immaculate; in business a smart suit is a clear investment. Make sure you wear a clean and ironed shirt/blouse, your shoes should be smart and polished. Always enter the interview room with your suit jacket on, if it is too warm politely ask if you can remove it. Keep jewellery to a minimum, you want to leave the interviewer impressed by your sales technique and not diverted by a metal stud protruding from your nose! Make sure finger nails are clean and if you have come straight from the office that you haven't got ink on your fingers from a leaking pen!
Body Language
Interviews can be incredibly nerve racking, you mustn't show this in the interview. Body language can contribute a lot to an interview-be confident, hold your head up high and smile it shows you are approachable. Always greet the client by their first name and with a firm hand shake, this shows added but not arrogant confidence. Throughout the interview keep eye contact, candidates looking at the floor or out of the window can be perceived as nervous or even worse bored, show the interviewer you are interested and respond to what they are telling you.
Talk the Talk
You will receive lots of information during the interview both about the company, the role, the commission structure and the culture of the company-listen well, you need to ask questions at the end of the interview and there is no point questioning them on areas they have already covered. Never interrupt an interviewer whilst they are talking, don't interpret what they are asking of you let them get all of the question out. In Recruitment interviews it is important to be concise, do not waffle and don't be afraid of silences, recruiters like to see candidates demonstrating their thought process. Obviously do not swear and do not be derogatory about your current/former employers to the interviewer. The interviewer will ask you questions based on your key skills & competencies, make sure you put substance behind your answers for example "Are you money motivated?" The answer should be yes and then an example of how you are "Yes I constantly look to make money by setting personal targets to achieve, I bought a new car last summer and spent 6 months increasing my commission to pay for the vehicle, I am now looking to purchase a new house."
