Graduate Guide to becoming a Sales Representative
Working in Sales can cover every industry. Sales is often a good route into a more technical role or on the way up to becoming a Sales Manager or Team Leader. Whatever industry they work in Sales Representatives are responsible for maximising profit by any means necessary. This can include cold-calling, warm-calling, networking, searching for leads or simply demonstrating products which can sell themselves.
Sales people tend to be confident, chatty with the ability to persuade and negotiate. It is important for sales people to be able to seek out new business and develop good working relationships. Depending upon the product or service you are selling there will be a differing set of skills needed. Harder to sell or more expensive products will result in a commission based role for the representative, in order to motivate them into working faster and closing that all important sale. Products that are in high demand require little selling and so more customer service related skills are required.
There are no formal requirements to get into sales. Becoming a good sales person requires training & practise. A successful representative is able to provide consistency in an uncertain market. Some people choose to work in field sales, which involves travelling directly to the work or home of the consumer in order to demonstrate the products that you offer. This role often requires periods of time spend away from home and long hours travelling to and from client sites.
It is quite easy to start a career in sales. Most roles do not require experience or qualifications. However within organisations there can be an element of pressure and competitiveness when up against other sales representatives performances.
